Digital Pioneers Academy: Rising Through the Ranks
After years without a football program, Digital Pioneers Academy (DPA) has not only established a team but has also become a formidable contender in local sports. Under the leadership of former Archbishop Carroll coach Rob Harris, DPA has started its inaugural varsity season with an impressive record of 5-0.
Digital Pioneers Academy, a beacon of hope in Southeast Washington.
Founded in 2017, DPA has long aspired to create a vibrant community centered around sports that fosters engagement and success among its students. After a tragic series of events that saw the loss of four pupils to gun violence, including several who had expressed an interest in joining the football team, the establishment of a football program took on even greater significance.
In light of this loss, DPA’s CEO Mashea Ashton reflects, > “I really do believe this: If we had had football, maybe they would still have been active and busy. They wouldn’t have had as much free time on their hands, and they honestly might still be with us. So we really launched football in their honor.”
A Team Built on Hope and Perseverance
The new football team at DPA is not just about competition; it is a symbol of resilience and opportunity. Currently leading the Public Charter School Athletic Association, the Pythons have allowed a mere 14 points against them in their first five games, showcasing their defensive prowess alongside a powerful attacking strategy.
Harris, now also the school’s athletic director, believes that the opportunity to build a football program—and an entire athletic department—was a challenge he was ready to embrace. He noted, > “It was an opportunity, not only to build a football program but to build an athletic department.”
Community Engagement and Support
The foundation of a strong football team does not merely lie in skill on the field but also in the community around it. Digital Pioneers Academy has shown incredible community engagement by transporting students to games in school buses, creating a vibrant atmosphere of support for their classmates as they compete. This commitment underscores the school’s overall philosophy: it is about building a future together.
In addition to engaging the student body, the program has garnered support through significant donations, including financial resources and equipment. The Washington Commanders contributed generously, helping DPA secure the necessary gear to start the team.
Building a Legacy
Among the players making waves is junior running back King Williams, who transferred to DPA this fall. He emphasizes the importance of this fresh start, stating, > “I’m somewhere now where I’m building my own legacy again.” His outstanding performance has been pivotal, with an impressive tally of 551 rushing yards and nine touchdowns in just five games.
Ashton, who has overseen the development of DPA from inception, is thrilled with the progress being made. This year marks a significant milestone: the first graduating class of students who started as sixth-graders. The school plans to celebrate this achievement with their first prom and graduation ceremony this spring, making it a historic moment for all involved.
Conclusion
As Digital Pioneers Academy stands as a testament to resilience, its football program symbolizes hope and community unity within Southeast Washington. The Pythons’ triumphant run so far this season is more than just a record; it is a building block for the future and combined legacy of the students endeavoring to rise above challenges, honoring those they’ve lost, and creating a vibrant community.
With every game, they are not just playing for points; they are making history.
Building a bright future through football.
