STEM Opportunities for High School Students on College Campuses
This summer, high school students can experience campus life through residential STEM programs offered by DAPCEP. Research has shown that studying on campuses at an early age gives students a glimpse into their future.
Students can experience campus life through residential STEM programs
Engineering and Computer Programming at Michigan State University
Oakland County students entering grades 10-12 in the fall can study engineering and computer programming at Michigan State University (MSU) starting July 8 in a residential program presented by DAPCEP and powered by United Way for Southeastern Michigan (UWSEM). The program will give students hands-on exposure to the field of engineering and life on the campus of MSU.
Students will explore engineering concepts and participate in hands-on, team-based projects
During the program, students will learn coding and programming languages such as Python, C++, and Swift. They will also tour scientific and engineering laboratories and engage with faculty on MSU’s campus.
Ford Futures Program at Michigan State University
The Ford Futures program, funded by Ford Motor Company, takes place at MSU the following week of July 15. This program is open to all 11th-grade students and focuses on computer science and engineering principles, coding using Python, data analytics, cybersecurity, and applications in autonomous vehicles.
Students will learn about autonomous vehicles and their applications
Both programs are $100, and financial aid is available. Students will stay in dorms on the campus of MSU, giving them a true college experience.
Continuing STEM Education
Following the summer camps, interested students can continue with DAPCEP and participate in the fall STEM Academy, also designed for Oakland County students and supported by United Way. Fall classes are in metro Detroit and some offer certification upon completion.
