Engaging Programs at the Turlock Library This October

October is a vibrant month at the Turlock Library, bursting with activities designed to captivate and educate children, teens, and adults alike. From creative crafts to science explorations and literary discussions, there’s something for everyone!

Creative Arts for All Ages

On October 1st, the library kicks off its month-long celebrations with a T(w)een Tuesday at 4 p.m. Here, participants aged 9 and up will explore the world of oil pastels as they create a mesmerizing moonlit pumpkin patch landscape. All materials will be provided, ensuring a hands-on experience for budding artists. Meanwhile, children aged 8 and under can join in at the same time for the Turlock Art Lab, where they’ll delve into the fun of monster symmetry by painting their own whimsical creatures. Note that children under four will need direct adult supervision during this engaging session.

Exciting activities await at the Turlock Library!

Following these artistic explorations, the Friends of the Turlock Library will convene on October 2nd at 6:30 p.m., inviting all community members to contribute ideas and support future library events.

Sewing and Science: A Unique Blend of Skills

On October 4th, the library will host a sewing class targeted at adults starting at 1 p.m. Participants will learn to craft a fabric-wrapped basket using zig-zag stitches and provided materials. This session is geared towards ages 18 and up, and registration is required due to limited space.

Simultaneously, the spotlight will shine on Python Ron, who will introduce his fascinating collection of lizards and snakes at 3:30 p.m. on both October 4th and 11th. This interactive educational show-and-tell is open to all ages, but due to space constraints, attendees can collect free tickets an hour prior to the event.

Reading, Robotics, and Anime: A Diverse Offer

The following day, October 5th, the library invites independent readers up to age 12 to join the Read to a Dog program at 12 noon. This delightful initiative aims to enhance reading skills by allowing children to read aloud to certified therapy dogs, fostering both confidence and joy in reading. Again, preregistration is essential as space is limited.

Children will also find enjoyment on October 8th with another T(w)een Tuesday event, this time focusing on stop-motion animation with LEGO blocks in the Maker Space at 4 p.m. Designed for ages 9 and older, this workshop invites all ages to play with LEGOs and learn to animate their creations.

Mysteries and Science Experiments

Book buffs should not miss the Mystery Lovers Book Club meeting on October 14th at 10:30 a.m. This month, members will dive into “A Morbid Taste For Bones” by Ellis Peters, sparking intriguing discussions about the novel’s themes and character dynamics.

Come October 15th, participants aged 9 and up will be drawn into the wonders of nature with a T(w)een Tuesday dedicated to spider science at 4 p.m. After learning how spiders construct their intricate webs, attendees will compete in a hands-on web-building challenge.

Simultaneously, the younger ones will explore how spiders catch their prey in the Turlock STEAM activity for children under 8, also at 4 p.m. Throughout this event, children under 4 must be accompanied by a supervising adult.

Celebrate Pokémon Day

On October 16th, the library will transform into a Pokémon haven from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for Turlock Pokémon Day. It promises a lively atmosphere where enthusiasts can meet, trade, battle on Nintendo Switches, or hunt for shinies in Pokémon GO. All ages are welcome, but children under 4 should have adult supervision.

In the same spirit, the Turlock Chess Club invites both amateurs and experienced players to meet and play at 5 p.m. for some friendly competition, regardless of skill level.
