October Festivities at Turlock Library: A Celebration of Creativity and Learning

As the crisp air of autumn embraces us, the Turlock Library is set to come alive with a plethora of engaging activities throughout October. Whether you are a young student eager to explore science, a budding artist, or a dedicated member of the community, there is something in store for everyone!

Discover the vibrant activities awaiting you this October!

A Month of Artistic Exploration

The month kicks off with a T(w)een Tuesday event on October 1st at 4 p.m., where participants can dive into the world of oil pastels. Young artists aged 9 and up will learn how to create beautiful moonlit pumpkin patch landscapes. This immersive experience not only sharpens artistic skills but also encourages self-expression.

For our littlest library goers, another exciting activity awaits at the same time for children aged 8 and under. The Turlock Art Lab invites these young creatives to explore the concept of symmetry by crafting monstrous painted creatures. With adult supervision required for children under 4, it’s a perfect opportunity for families to engage together.

Unleash your creativity this fall!

Building Community Connections

The Friends of Turlock Library will gather at 6:30 p.m. on October 2nd, welcoming all community members to come together for camaraderie and shared interests. This spirit of community continues with a sewing class scheduled for October 4th at 1 p.m. Participants aged 18 and up can learn the basics of making a fabric-wrapped basket, alongside mastering the zig-zag stitch on sewing machines provided by the library. Registration for this hands-on workshop is essential, exhibiting the library’s commitment to fostering practical skills among adults.

The excitement doesn’t stop there! Python Ron will grace the library with his intriguing show on October 4th and 11th at 3:30 p.m. Here, animal enthusiasts of all ages can interact with reptiles and learn fascinating facts in a fun, educational environment.

“Engaging children in learning through direct experience fosters not only knowledge but also a sense of confidence.”

Engaging educational activities

One of the highlights of October is the Read to a Dog program on October 5th at noon, which targets independent readers up to age 12. This initiative helps bolster confidence in reading by allowing children to read aloud to certified therapy dogs, creating a serene and non-judgmental atmosphere that’s conducive to learning.

Reading is a joy, especially when shared with our furry friends!

Fun for all ages

Later in the month, Turlock will celebrate Pokémon Day on October 16th from 1 to 3 p.m. This event is a thrilling chance for Pokémon enthusiasts to gather, trade cards, and battle on Nintendo Switches. All are welcome to join in, with children needing adult supervision to ensure a fun, safe interaction.

In addition to this, the Turlock Chess Club will convene later that day at 5 p.m., inviting players of all skill levels to engage in friendly competition. Chess not only sharpens the mind but also connects individuals through strategy and sportsmanship.

Masquerade Masks and Composting Basics

As Halloween approaches, creativity resumes with the T(w)een Tuesday event on October 22nd, where participants can craft masquerade masks, all while highlighting the importance of creativity and festive cheer. For the younger crowd, animal-shaped masks await!

To round out the month, join the UCCE Master Gardeners on October 23rd for an informative presentation on the basics of composting. This segment invites the community to explore how they can transform kitchen waste into “gold” for their gardens, symbolizing sustainable practices that can be adopted by everyone.

Creativity shines with every mask made!
