IT Freshers: Navigating a Booming Job Market
The Indian IT sector is experiencing a notable rejuvenation in fresher hiring, with expectations of growth ranging from 20% to 25% for 2024-2025. This surge can be attributed to a heightened focus on specialized skills that cater to the technology landscape’s evolving needs, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and data analytics.
Expanding opportunities in tech sectors await fresh talents.
The downturn in hiring that characterized the previous years is set to reverse, especially as global capability centers project a staggering 40% increase in the recruitment of fresh graduates compared to last year. According to a TeamLease Digital analysis, this trend underscores a widespread demand for data-imperative roles that hinge on AI, ML, and automation skills.
TeamLease Digital’s findings reveal an extraordinary uptick in job postings for data scientists, with nearly 69% highlighting the necessity for ML skills in positions slated for 2024. Additionally, roles requiring expertise in natural language processing have surged dramatically, racing from 5% in 2024 to 19% in 2025, marking a significant industry shift towards AI-driven methodologies.
As the tech landscape continues its rapid metamorphosis, professionals with skills in programming (particularly Python), ethical hacking, penetration testing, Agile methodologies, AWS security, and JavaScript are much sought after.
“The tech industry continues to transform rapidly,” says Neeti Sharma, CEO of TeamLease Digital. “To stay ahead, companies must align their talent strategies with technological advancements, particularly in AI and Cloud computing.”
Sharma emphasizes that investing in upskilling programs has become essential for professionals seeking to remain competitive in a dynamic environment. This alignment will be vital for sustaining growth and fostering innovation in the foreseeable future.
Industry leaders from firms like Accenture, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and HCLTech echo these sentiments. During an analysts’ call following the release of TCS’s Q2 FY25 results, Chief Human Resource Officer Milind Lakkad indicated that the company is doubling its intake of higher-cadre trainees. “Our current trainee hiring is segmented with differential compensation for each segment. This year, we have more than doubled our intake of higher-cadre trainees,” Lakkad mentioned.
HCLTech, on the other hand, is shifting its focus on campus hiring towards specialization rather than mere quantity. Ramachandran Sundararajan, Chief People Officer at HCLTech, stated that the shift has been ongoing for the past year.
HCLTech emphasizes specialization in its recruitment process.
“Today, we are increasingly finding that students are specializing in data and AI. Some of these disciplines attract substantial skills, enabling them to transition to project mode very quickly,” Sundararajan elaborated. The focus on specialization correlates with higher salaries for fresh graduates entering these complex fields. Those selected for product-based roles can expect compensation nearly four times the standard figures, while those specializing in data may receive offers that are two to three times higher than the average.
Moreover, the TeamLease analysis indicates that this specialized focus shapes not only entry-level hiring but extends to mid-level and senior roles as well. The demand for mid-level professionals, such as project managers, data scientists, and cybersecurity experts, has shown stability, with salary increments ranging from 7.89% to 10.2% compared to the previous cycle. Senior management roles are benefitting from a whopping 21% demand increase since last year, driven by the strategic importance of data engineering, product management, and DevOps, with salaries rising between 6.54% to 10.8%.
As the shift to cloud infrastructures accelerates, the hiring of professionals skilled in Cloud engineering, development, and architecture is also on the rise. Organizations are prioritizing platform-specific certifications, particularly in AWS and Microsoft Azure, with these credentials becoming increasingly viewed as indispensable. Projections suggest that by FY25, India will need over 2 million Cloud professionals to support the rapid adoption of cloud technologies across sectors.
In summary, the landscape for IT freshers is transforming. With a clear renunciation of the previous hiring slowdown, new opportunities beckon. Graduates with specialized skills will not only find ample job openings but also potentially lucrative compensation packages. The future of tech recruitment is not merely a question of quantity but rather quality; companies that adapt swiftly to these changing paradigms will remain at the forefront of innovation and growth in the burgeoning technology sector.
