The Invasion of the Burmese Pythons
The Florida Everglades are facing an invasion of epic proportions. Burmese pythons, once popular pets in the 1970s and 80s, have established a foothold in the region and are wreaking havoc on the native ecosystem.

The annual Florida Python Challenge, which began last Friday and runs until next Sunday, aims to capture and kill as many of these invasive snakes as possible. The competition, which has been running for over a decade, has already removed 917 Burmese pythons from the wild, including 209 last year.
But the problem is far from solved. Burmese pythons, which can grow up to 6-9 feet in length, have few natural predators and are known to hunt prey as large as alligators and deer, as well as smaller animals like woodrats and spoonbills. They also harbor parasites that can kill native snakes.
The impact of the Burmese python invasion is not limited to the environment. The snakes also pose a threat to human safety, as they are known to attack people who enter their territory.

The Florida Python Challenge is not just about removing invasive snakes from the wild; it’s also about raising awareness about the issue and promoting conservation efforts. The competition is open to both amateur and professional snake hunters, and the grand prize is $10,000 for the removal of the most pythons.
As the competition heats up, it’s clear that the invasion of the Burmese pythons is a serious issue that requires immediate attention. The Florida Python Challenge is a step in the right direction, but it’s just the beginning. We need to continue to raise awareness and promote conservation efforts to protect the native ecosystem of the Florida Everglades.

“Removing invasive pythons from across the Greater Everglades Ecosystem is critical, and we must do everything we can to combat this invasive species,” Ron Bergeron, a member of the South Florida Water Management District governing board, said in a statement.
